IKEA BaleTainer outperforms all expectations

A Strautmann BaleTainer, recently installed at the IKEA site in Gateshead, is “outperforming all expectations”.

Supplied and installed by Jarshire Ltd, the baler is the first of a series to be installed at IKEA stores throughout the UK. Gateshead Recovery Department Manager, Stephen Faddy, reports that it is handling waste very well and currently saving on average 30 hours per week compared to the previous baler.

Mr Faddy adds: “We now have a solution for baling cardboard, and have gained extra income in the process.  Also, as we now bale our cardboard, we don’t have crates standing in the yard thereby saving space”.

IKEA sends its waste by trailer to be recycled and is gaining a higher return on each trailer load as it is filled with bales each containing the equivalent of approximately 8 crates of cardboard.

Specifically designed to work outdoors, the Baletainer is a unique machine for the compaction of paper, cardboard and emptied PET bottles.  The large filling aperture allows the processing of large cardboard pieces - approx 130 x 200cm - and the filling of the press chamber, the output and binding of the bales is completely automatic.

With a small footprint of 200 x 500cm, the BaleTainer presses a bale in three slices and not in one as is usually the case meaning that there is a reduction in the pressing forces and energy required.

The installation process was quick and simple and had little if any impact on the company’s operation.  Full training was provided, taking a maximum of 20 minutes on the operational side.

Mr Faddy: ”Compared to the previous machine, the quicker loading and processing speed, and not having to cut cardboard into smaller pieces prior to loading, have been the significant factors in bringing about the improvements on the IKEA site.”

IKEA Gateshead are so impressed with Jarshire’s service that they have also ordered an IPS V606 Mill size vertical baler for internal use to process plastic film.
